As a shopping reporter, trust me when I say I understand better than most that Amazon's sale schedule can feel a little fatiguing. However, as a headphones reviewer, I also can't deny that this year's Big Spring Sale offers a great opportunity to upgrade your audio game on the cheap.

Having spent a few years testing headphones, and the last year covering the latest in noise-cancelling tech, open earbuds, and sleep earbuds, I went into this last week of March curious to see what the third iteration of Amazon's Big Spring Sale could bring. Sure, I'd seen the mega-retailer offer some solid tech deals in the two years prior, but the second day of this sale is proving that Amazon isn't playing with savings in headphones this year.

Already, the newly announced Apple AirPods Max 2 are $19 off, even though they're still in their preorder phase. Sony's latest flagship headphones and earbuds are both marked down, and Shokz has plenty of deals for anyone looking for a new pair of workout earbuds. And as of March 27, Bose finally has some discounts too, on three of their popular models: the QuietComfort headphones, QuietComfort Ultra 2 headphones, and Ultra Open earbuds.

This sale is on for one week, from March 25 to March 31 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Anything is possible, but with most of the below deals, I don't imagine we'll see wild fluctuations in price. In other words, if you see a pair of headphones or earbuds you like, I recommend scooping them up.

Sony's flagship headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM6, are still relatively new, all things considered, meaning that catching them on sale isn't always a given. Granted, even though their sale price of $398 does net you a nice $61.99 price cut, they're still expensive headphones. (If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, I recommend the Sony WH-CH720N). That said, if you're looking for the best of the best, these Sony headphones offer some of the best sound, noise cancellation, and all-day wear I've ever tried. Plus, unlike their predecessor, their ear cups actually fold. Grab them on sale in any of the available four colorways.

If the WH-1000XM6 are out of your price range, go for a more budget-friendly option. The JLab Lux are surprisingly great for a pair of headphones under $100, and right now you can get them for just $41.99.

As much as I love a good pair of premium earbuds, I'm less in love with the idea of paying over $200 for quality ANC and sound when you can get that for much, much cheaper. For day-to-day use, I often find myself reaching for the Sony WF-C710N earbuds. They have great battery life, a compact case for easy portability, really solid ANC, and a rounded sound profile worthy of the Sony name. Pokémon Pokopia isn't the first big hit for Nintendo Switch 2, but it's arguably the first one to make a lot of people online feel left out about not owning the console.

With tons of people sharing wild builds on social media, Pokopia is pretty hard to resist for lovers of Animal Crossing, Minecraft, and any of the game's other big influences. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch 2 costs money, and we live in uncertain economic times. All of this raises the question: Should you buy a Switch 2 for Pokopia?

The arguments for getting a Switch 2 just for Pokopia are pretty straightforward: It's a great game, and the Switch 2 is a great console.

At this point, you already know if Pokopia is your cup of tea or not. I don't need to explain to you why it is or isn't. All I can say is that I'm super not into life sim games generally, but Pokopia got its hooks in me pretty good for a couple of weeks. The developers at Nintendo, Koei Tecmo, and Game Freak have delivered the best Pokémon game in years, full of whimsy and personality, and you can potentially play it forever if you want.

But the nice thing about a Switch 2 is that it can play other games, too. Games like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and any number of visually enhanced Switch 1 games. That doesn't even get into the massive treasure trove of third-party games, big and small, that you can get on the eShop. Heck, you can even play Virtual Boy games on it, if that's your thing. The Switch 2 might not get every big, hyped up AAA blockbuster (don't count on it getting GTA6), but just about everything else that's worth playing will eventually make its way onto Nintendo's console in due time.

Heck, there are even rumors of a brand new Star Fox game and a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time coming in 2026. The Switch 2's lineup could very well be pretty stacked by the end of this year.

Why you shouldn't buy a Switch 2 for Pokopia

The argument against buying a Switch 2 for Pokopia is also easy to lay out: It costs a lot of money that you could spend elsewhere, especially in these economic conditions.

Considering that a Switch 2 on its own is $450 and Pokopia is $70 on top of that, it's hard to blame anyone who would rather hold onto their $520 for the time being, especially if the person reading this is really only interested in Pokopia and wouldn't want to play the other games I listed above.

In the end, there is more to life than video games. But video games are also pretty damn cool, so there's no wrong decision here.

Meet Claude Mythos: Leaked Anthropic post reveals the powerful upcoming model

An accidental leak has now been officially confirmed by AI company Anthropic regarding its most powerful AI model yet.

The model, now known as "Claude Mythos," was originally uncovered in a report from Fortune. Anthropic has since confirmed the details about the leak to the outlet.

The data leak included details about the upcoming release of the Claude Mythos AI model, an "exclusive CEO event," and other internal assets such as PDFs and images, according to Fortune. In total, the leak included nearly 3,000 assets that Anthropic had not previously published.

Claude Mythos leak details

According to Anthropic, the leak was the result of an issue with the content management system (CMS) that the company uses. The data was uploaded to the CMS by the company. However, Anthropic failed to mark the items as private so the data was stored in a publicly accessible data lake.

Some of the data was unused assets from past announcements from Anthropic. Other leaked data was internal corporate information such as employee details or info about an invite-only CEO event.

Also found within the leaked data, however, was information about Claude Mythos in an unpublished blog post draft.

Claude Mythos and Capybara

According to the leaked draft about Claude Mythos, Anthropic has completed its training of the model and refers to it as “by far the most powerful AI model we’ve ever developed.”

In a statement provided to Fortune after the leak, an Anthropic spokesperson described Claude Mythos as an AI performance “step change” and said the model is “the most capable we’ve built to date.” Anthropic says that Claude Mythos is currently in the trial stage and available to select "early access customers."

In addition to the new AI model, the leaked post also mentions a new, unreleased AI model tier from Anthropic called Capybara.

Anthropic currently offers three different tier levels for each of its AI models: Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. Opus is currently its most powerful and most expensive tier whereas Haiku is the smallest and least expensive. Capybara would sit even above Opus as Anthropic's largest and most intelligent AI model tier.

The leaked post also details Anthropic's concerns about the cybersecurity risks that Claude Mythos brings to the table, too. It appears that Anthropic believes that Claude Mythos could be used by hackers to run cyberattacks.

“In preparing to release Claude Capybara, we want to act with extra caution and understand the risks it poses — even beyond what we learn in our own testing," reads the leaked Anthropic post. "In particular, we want to understand the model’s potential near-term risks in the realm of cybersecurity — and share the results to help cyber defenders prepare.”

Anthropic described its unreleased model as “currently far ahead of any other AI model in cyber capabilities” and that the model “presages an upcoming wave of models that can exploit vulnerabilities in ways that far outpace the efforts of defenders.”

The company said in the leaked draft blog that it was providing early access to organization to give them "a head start in improving the robustness of their codebases against the impending wave of AI-driven exploits.”

If you want a pair of earbuds that stand out from the crowd without emptying your wallet, the Nothing Ear (a) should definitely be on your radar. For the Big Spring Sale, they've dropped to just $58.99, which is $50 off their usual $109 list price.

Mashable's Tech Reporter, Alex Perry, recently rounded up the reviews for these buds, and the consensus is that they deliver way more than their price tag suggests. They offer an open-midrange sound and clarity that outperform those of standard, more expensive AirPods, and they have active noise cancellation strong enough to drown out loud household distractions. Plus, you'll get around five hours of battery life even with every single battery-draining feature turned on at once, like ANC and multipoint pairing.

As always, I checked the fine print, and there are a couple of things you should know. Perry noted that the biggest critique across the board is that the charging case lacks Qi wireless charging and relies strictly on USB-C. But skipping wireless charging is a fair trade-off for a case that's as small and pocketable as Apple's AirPods. Also, according to the Amazon listing, the voice-enabled ChatGPT feature will only work on a Nothing series phone. Still, grabbing earbuds with this level of sound quality for under $60 is a total steal.

Gemini will let you import ChatGPT, other chatbot conversations

Google is making it way easier for loyal OpenAI users to make the switch to Gemini.

This week, the company announced a suite of new "switching tools" that let users efficiently transfer entire chat logs and "memories" — or individual profile details like personal preferences, relationships, and historic context — directly into a new Gemini account. The goal is to skip the time needed to personalize a nascent chatbot assistant and get right into using a Gemini that knows you.

"Once you import these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you’ve shared with other apps, like your interests, your sibling’s name, or where you grew up. Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you," the company wrote in a March 26 blog post.

In addition, Gemini can now access and learn from the rest of your linked Google accounts, including Gmail and Photos, using Google's Personal Intelligence.

How to import your chatbot conversations to Gemini

The tools don't just involve simple data upload, although users are encouraged to upload entire chat logs via zip file, too. Instead, Gemini uses your existing chatbot's knowledge to its advantage, offering tailored prompts to gather "memory" that can then be fed back to Gemini. Here's how to use it:

Why users may be flocking to Gemini

Earlier this month, TechCrunch reported that the standalone ChatGPT app had experienced 295 percent day-over-day increase in app uninstalls and a 13 percent decline in downloads, following news that the chatbot's parent company had brokered a deal with President Donald Trump's Department of War. The company swooped in amid an ongoing feud between Anthropic, makers of chatbot Claude, and the Pete Hegseth-led department over the use of generative AI tools for mass domestic surveillance and the potential creation of weapons.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman quickly backtracked, saying that the company had moved too fast in an effort to "de-escalate" a tense situation. But users were still put off by the company's quick acquiescence in negotiating a contract with the administration. Meanwhile, downloads for the Claude app jumped.

If you have the budget for a premium audio upgrade, the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds are my favorite overall pick right now. They just launched last month with a pretty hefty $329.99 price tag, so seeing them drop to $298 this early is a surprisingly fast discount.

When I tested these for my official review, I was legitimately distracted by how good the music sounded right out of the box. They're easily the most well-rounded and effective noise-cancelling earbuds released in the past year, effortlessly handling everything from shrieking guitar riffs to heavy bass without getting crunchy. Even my editor, Timothy Beck Werth, agreed the audio is "really darn good."

I do have to mention a minor hang-up, though: the touch controls aren't quite as seamless as you'd expect for the price. However, if you're looking for a comfortable fit for all-day wear and top-tier noise cancellation, these might just be the best earbuds of the year.

The AirPods Pro 3 are still quite new, having only hit the market this past fall. The earbuds are undeniably the best Apple has released yet, featuring two times the noise cancellation power of the second-gen Pros, a well-rounded sound profile, eight hours of battery life per charge, a built-in heart rate monitor, and live translation features. In his review of the buds, Mashable contributor Adam Doud wrote, "Overall, the AirPods Pro 3 are a remarkable upgrade, even over the AirPods Pro 2, which were already very good."

They also hook up to the Soundcore app so you can mess around with 22 different EQ presets and use the "Find My Earbuds" feature if you lose one in the couch cushions.

Just keep in mind that for 20 bucks, you aren't getting active noise cancellation or multipoint pairing — but for commutes, podcasts, or just keeping a backup pair in your gym bag, they easily punch above their weight class.

When it comes to open earbuds, it seems more and more options are coming out by the day. While the Bose Ultra Open earbuds are one of the most popular options, Sony's latest release, the Sony LinkBuds Clip, is worth a closer look. Like the Bose buds, they have a clip design built for maximizing comfort. Also like the Bose buds, they have excellent sound quality.

Mashable contributor Simon Cohen wrote in his review of the buds, "With the possible exception of Bose’s Ultra Open Earbuds ($299), the LinkBuds Clip are the best [open earbuds] I’ve heard." On sale, they're also over $100 cheaper than the Bose buds, so second-best in sound quality hardly feels like settling here.

Take it from someone who tests multiple robot vacuums each month: Not even the best robot vacuum AI features are immune to screwing up. If you're inclined to just do the job yourself — or if the concept of a robot vacuum with a camera sketches you out — at least make the chore enjoyable with a good stick vacuum. You have serious options to choose from at Amazon's Big Spring Sale.

Our favorite cordless vacuum deals so far are all vacuums that someone at Mashable has tested at home and loved. I'll admit that any list of top stick vacuums feels weird without multiple Dyson mentions — Amazon typically isn't a reliable spot to find good deals on Dyson vacuums (even though Amazon's deals on other Dyson products can be quite good.) Most worthwhile Dyson deals simply tend to pop up Dyson.com or Walmart, like the Dyson V12 Detect Slim on sale for $479.99. Maybe it's delusional, but I'm still optimistic about the possibility of Dyson dropping a discount on the new Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones.

If you just want a reliable, no-frills tracker that won't cost more than your gym membership, the Fitbit Inspire 3 is our favorite budget pick. It's normally priced right around $100, but for the Big Spring Sale, it's down to a very affordable $69.95.

In our review, Mashable's Sam Stone calls it the "budget-friendly fitness tracker of our dreams." It sits easily on the wrist and automatically categorizes your activities (so it knows if you're out for a bike ride or a run) without you having to manually mess with the settings.

Because we actually test these things, we do have to mention a couple of minor quirks. Stone says that the heart rate monitor can occasionally get a little inaccurate if your wrist gets super sweaty during an intense workout. Also, the battery life is closer to six or seven days rather than the advertised 10. But considering it fully charges in under two hours, that's barely an inconvenience — and as Stone points out, it "sure beats the Apple Watch's battery life."

If you're looking for a solid Apple Watch deal, this $100 price drop on the Series 11 makes it a pretty stellar value. PS5, PS5 Pro price hikes announced as Sony blames economic pressures

If you spent $500 on a PlayStation 5 at launch in 2020, you can take some solace in knowing that's the cheapest one of those things will ever get.

Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog that PS5 consoles are getting price increases in basically every major global market, including the U.S., effective April 2. In the blog post, Sony vaguely blamed current economic conditions for the price hikes, which any eagle-eyed reader will recognize as Sony most likely pointing the finger at both Donald Trump's tariff policies and the global AI arms race that's driving up prices for all electronics.

The new prices in USD are as follows:

  • Base PS5: $649.99

  • PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99

  • PS5 Pro: $899.99

This price hike, combined with another PlayStation price hike that took place last August, means these devices all cost anywhere from $150 to $200 more than they did at launch. The PlayStation Portal device also got a price jump to $249.99 as part of this announcement. Separately, Xbox consoles also increased in price last year. So far, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been unaffected by this, but that console has only been on the market for a little less than a year. It would not be a shock to see Nintendo join in on this trend at some point.

It's definitely worth noting that this is far from normal in the world of video game hardware. For my entire life, the price of consoles has gone down over time, not up. Companies usually release cheaper hardware revisions as a console's lifespan goes on, so more and more people can get in on the fun. Thanks to tariffs and AI, however, that seems to no longer be the case.

Castfishing is the latest scam, and its scarily like sextortion

When my partner, actor and writer Tom Ward-Thomas, applied for the Amazon series The Power, he was asked to send in an audition tape, commonly referred to as a "self-tape." The role called for a character to strip and perform a humiliating dance. The nudity was implied, not shown — yet the "production" wanted him to strip down for the audition.

"I did the tape, head and shoulders only, and removed my top. They loved the tape but now wanted a full-body shot and told me, 'Feel free to go all the way.' I said I was happy to go down to underwear, not naked," Ward-Thomas recalls. "I never heard from them again."

More recently, in Dec. 2025, Ward-Thomas was contacted directly, not via his agent, with another opportunity, in exchange for an "audition" requiring a 30-second clip involving full frontal nudity, which he spotted as a scam.

"I wasn't sure from the beginning whether it was above water, but when he was insisting on a naked self-tape, I realised it was not above board."

The rise of this practice, which we're coining "castfishing," has become a plague on the industry. Mashable spoke to actors and other experts about these scammers and who they're exploiting.

What is the 'castfishing' scam?

Castfishing is the offer of a big break in exchange for a nude video.

An anonymous former actor who left the industry told Mashable they've experienced more than one scam casting call with characters in sexual situations. In one experience they described, the character had a bloodthirsty and insatiable lust and spent most of the film luring others into having sex.  

"The 'self-tape' was expecting my own interpretation…and was without lines. Nudity was fine to be included! The production notes at the bottom of the treatment said 'no acting experience necessary,'" they say.  

While catfishing — pretending to be someone else online — isn't new, what's different here is the entry point, says Anna Rowe, founder of romance fraud education site Catch the Catfish and fraud centre and think tank LoveSaid. 

"Instead of romance or flirtation, offenders are exploiting ambition, authority, and the power imbalance in the creative industries. They're grooming victims under the guise of professionalism, using industry language, fake opportunities and implied expectations to normalise increasingly inappropriate requests," says Rowe.

By the time nudity is introduced, Rowe went on, the victim doesn't feel like they're being exploited, but evaluated.

"That's what makes this so dangerous," she says. "It removes the internal alarm system people usually have with sextortion, because it doesn't feel like a sexual interaction. It feels like a career opportunity, which can be rare."

Exploitative practices encouraging nudity predate the rise of the self-tape, with one Redditor sharing their own experience of a sham in-person audition requiring full nudity on tape. 

The arts have long been plagued by abuses of power, with scandals continuing to make headlines. The multiple allegations of abuse from Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, which catapulted the #MeToo movement in 2017, are just a handful of examples.

But now that self-tapes are more common, so is castfishing.

Self-tapes are the new norm in Hollywood

There was a shift towards self-tapes that happened just before COVID, and it became a massive trend afterwards, actor and agent Lydia Piechowiak told Mashable.

"Technology has expanded opportunity, but it's also expanded opportunity for bad actors," says actor Jona Xiao, who at 12 years old first experienced a scam audition, looking for monetary gain.

The rise of self-taping democratized access, she says. Actors don't have to live in LA or New York to audition anymore, and that's powerful. But, "it's also created new vulnerabilities. It's easier than ever for someone to create a fake breakdown [summary of the project and roles], request tapes, or present themselves as legitimate without in-person accountability."

Equity, the leading British performing arts trade union, recognised a spike in complaints when surveying about self-tapes in 2020. Actors found their time exploited, auditioning and never knowing if it was watched, needing to develop their own filming skills, and often needing a scene partner. Despite this, the self-tape boom has continued, both for good and bad.

An industry standard to prevent the exploitation of actors' time and otherwise has been established, thanks to multiple organisations representing or working with actors, but the standard must be upheld. 

In 2023, a group of UK actors came together to publish their own self-tape best-practice document, hoping to regulate a practice they called "the main route to work." Speaking to Variety, the group stated, "If we're going to have self-tapes, they need to be done in a way that's transparent, regulated and fair."

"Often they'll [casting directors] say, if it's a scene requiring you to be topless, 'please don't film this topless' or will say, 'please don't submit actors [who] are not comfortable with this,'" says Piechowiak from her experience as an agent. 

However, unrepresented actors may not have this level of protection, or actors may be contacted directly. 

Real-life audition scandals

Joey Gugliemelli, better known as Sherry Pie, a would-be contestant on the twelfth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, made headlines in 2020 after five young actors came forward with accusations that Gugliemelli had exploited them while posing as a casting director via e-mail.

Gugliemelli reportedly encouraged actors to remove clothing on camera, even going as far as to encourage one man to masturbate on camera, according to BuzzFeed News. The scheme was apparently in-depth and pitted actors against each other, encouraging them to strip while insinuating that other auditioners were doing the same thing. 

VH1 swiftly disqualified Sherry Pie from Drag Race after the accusations came to light, and she was mostly edited out of the season. Despite admitting to inappropriate behavior, she's still performing drag as of this year.

Another public example of castfishing is former Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke, who was accused of recording nude auditions and showing them to others in 2021, as reported by The Guardian. Clarke later lost a libel case against The Guardian, with the Court finding allegations of sexual misconduct "substantially true."

"We have, anecdotally, received several of these types of cases over the last few years," says a representative for the Revenge Porn Helpline, which supports UK adults who have been affected by intimate image abuse.

The representative told Mashable these have mainly been fake modeling opportunities, which entailed contacting women and asking for fully-clothed and nude images to "create a portfolio." Once the extorters receive this content, they blackmail the women to not share it or request more intimate content. In some circumstances, the representative says, the extorter will block the woman, leaving her concerned about what might happen. "The purpose of this is unknown," the representative says. 

"Abusers are excellent at manipulating not just their victims, but also people and institutions that should be enforcing the safety rules. Once a predator finds an environment where he or she can get away with minor infractions, the misconduct usually escalates," says Mick Grewal, a lawyer with expertise in cases of sexual abuse. He represented over 100 survivors of Larry Nassar in a $500 million settlement case against Michigan State University.

How to spot castfishing or other scams

"Your instincts are usually right. Trust yourself," recommends Grewal.

"If you believe a crime has been committed, you can contact law enforcement. A lawyer can help you navigate the justice system and discuss civil remedies like restraining orders and injunctions, invasion of privacy claims, and seeking accountability through compensation for economic and non-economic damages," Grewal continues.

Equity's self-tape guidelines (and SAG-AFTRA's in the U.S.) prohibit nudity in self-tapes, Equity's TV official Natalie Barker told Mashable. But legitimate casting processes may continue to ask for nudity. In 2022, intimacy director and actor Katrina Stelk wrote that the guidelines are a good step, but that casting directors may not be aware of them.

Multiple UK-based sources Mashable spoke to confirmed that another Equity guideline, a three-day window for self-tape return, is often not followed, even via an agent. This again represents an abuse of power by influential decision makers in the industry.

Outside of this, it can be down to the directors to ensure actors are protected.  

"Because the context is so different in a self-tape, you have to provide constructive guidance to facilitate an actor [to do] the work," says Ellie Heydon, actor and director of BBC's Outrageous.

"If we're sending off a scene, even with a kiss in, I'll usually write an accompanying note that says don't worry about the physical intimacy, or rub that bit out, and then you're not leaving it up to the actor to then interpret it," Heydon says.

Without enforcement and proper regulation, there is still a long way to go. "The industry hasn't eliminated exploitation. It's just evolved," says Xiao on bad actors focusing on self-tape auditions. 

"We would always advise members to consult our casting vetting guidelines and do due diligence — make sure it's a reputable production company/casting director; ensure nudity is required for the role; that if they do decide to send a video or images containing nudity, they do so via a secure data transfer service and that there is an explicit safeguarding policy around how the data will be kept confidential and deleted,"  says Barker.

However, until we see more regulation, especially in the age of AI, it'll take time to ensure protection against fake casting calls — and maybe even longer before it's enforced.
