Apple unveils M5 chip, supercharging AI performance
Apple has finally announced its new super-powered processor, expected to be the core of the refreshed 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro.
The M5 chip boasts four times the processing power of the company's last entry, as well as a more powerful CPU, improved 16-core Neural Engine, and increased memory bandwidth. But most significantly to the tech giant — which has leaned into Apple Intelligence I in its recent product and feature launches — it's a major leap forward for Apple's AI and silicon investments.
SEE ALSO: In Europe, Apple's new MacBook Pro comes without a charger"With the introduction of Neural Accelerators in the GPU, M5 delivers a huge boost to AI workloads," said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies in a blog post. "Combined with a big increase in graphics performance, the world’s fastest CPU core, a faster Neural Engine, and even higher unified memory bandwidth, M5 brings far more performance and capabilities to MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro.”
Generative AI features, like Apple Vision Pro's Personas and Apple Intelligence's integrated tools and assistants, will be faster and more energy efficient with M5's Neural Engine, according to Apple. The company is pitching M5's next gen GPU as a revolutionary upgrade for apps running on Apple frameworks and APIs, resulting in "smoother gameplay, more realistic visuals in 3D applications, and faster rendering times for complex graphics projects and other visually intensive applications."

In Europe, Apples new MacBook Pro comes without a charger
If you're buying Apple's new M5 MacBook Pro in Europe, you won't get a charger in the box.
This is hardly surprising, given that Apple started shipping iPhones and other devices without a charging brick a few years back. Still, while nearly everyone has an extra phone charging brick lying around, that might not be the case with MacBooks, so this is certain to irk some users.
If you don't have a spare charging brick lying around, you'll have to purchase one at an extra cost. In the UK, the 70W USB-C Power Adapter costs £59.00. In Germany, it will set you back €65.

Two whole meters! Credit: AppleApple stopped shipping chargers with many of its products, starting with the iPhone 12, citing environmental concerns. While this wasn't met with a lot of enthusiasm in some markets, the company continued to gradually remove charging bricks out of its product boxes over the years.
Grab a Tile Mate Bluetooth tracker for its best price ever

If you're regularly misplacing important items and you haven't invested in Bluetooth trackers yet, this deal on the Tile Mate is the perfect excuse to start.
As of Oct. 15, the Tile Mate is on sale for only $14.99 at Amazon. That's 40% or $10 off its usual cost of $24.99 and its lowest price on record.
Tile is kind of the OG of Bluetooth trackers and the Mate was one of the first to hit the market way back in 2016. Since then, it's had quite a few upgrades and facelifts, ensuring it's still a solid option in an increasingly crowded category. It remains one of our top picks in 2025 — specifically for households with Apple and Android devices under one roof. Many Bluetooth trackers are specifically built for Apple, Google, or Samsung devices, but Tile has its own network via the Life360 app and is device agnostic.
The Tile Mate's features are competitive — it can ring your phone from the tracker and trigger a silent alarm with an SOS alert. However, because it has its own network, it's a bit less developed than other trackers. The Bluetooth range is also smaller at only 350 feet, which makes the Mate better for finding household items than locating lost luggage. We recommend attaching these little trackers to things like your keys, wallet, remote control, or any other device you tend to lose track of around the house.
While the Tile Mate comes in all sorts of fun colors, you'll only get the all-time low $14.99 price on the black option. Otherwise, it'll cost you an extra $5 per tracker. FWIW, that's still cheaper than an AirTag.
TiVo discontinues its DVR boxes, and some of us feel a little older
In a move that you might've expected already happened years ago, TiVo has officially killed off its DVR recording boxes.
The company is no longer selling the boxes that revolutionized the way folks watched TV. Remember the neighborhood family that first got a TiVo? It was like magic. Now, well, it's the era of streaming. And recording a live show — if you need to do it at all — does not require a different set-top box.
The disappearance of the TiVo DVR was first reported by Cord Cutter News. The news has since been confirmed by the company.
“I can confirm that as of October 1, 2025, TiVo stopped selling physical DVR products, including hardware and accessories, both online and through agents,” spokeswoman Caroline Anson told PC Mag. “TiVo no longer manufactures hardware, and our remaining inventory is now depleted, though we will continue to offer support for the products going forward.”
(Disclosure: PC Mag is owned by Ziff Davis, which also owns Mashable.)
TiVo has pivoted to being a software company, creating an operating system mostly used by TVs sold in Europe.

Looking for a way to streamline your cleaning routine? You could hire a maid, but that's going to be pretty costly. And you could farm out cleaning tasks to the kids if you have them. But even better than both of these methods is using a robot vacuum and mop to save you some time while you handle other things. And thanks to this great deal from Amazon, you can get an excellent combo unit for the lowest sale price yet.
As of Oct. 15, get the iRobot Roomba Plus 405 Combo for $398.99, down from its usual price of $665. That's $266.01 off and a discount of 40%. It's also the lowest price we've seen.
SEE ALSO: The best robot vacuums in 2025This robot vacuum and mop combo is built for deep cleaning, with 70x of suction power to pull up tough dirt and debris from your carpet and old stains when mopping. It can handle pet messes, crumbs, spills, hair, and anything else you can think of by powering through everything like a hot knife through butter.
Thanks to its ClearView LiDAR setup, it can create a floorplan while cleaning your space so it knows which obstacles to avoid, when to mop instead of vacuum (it can switch between functionality automatically), and set up zones for it to stay in and out of. You can even use special Clean Zones to target specific messes and Keep Out Zones so your robot vacuum knows exactly where it belongs (and where it doesn't).
If you're tired of manually handling all of these tasks, maybe it's time to sit back, relax, and let the robots do everything, especially since you can save a ton of money right now by automating your cleaning routine. Ah, the future.
Apple unveils the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip and 24-hour battery life
A new MacBook is here — and it's using Apple's new M5 chip.
On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro. It's powered by the M5 chip and macOS Tahoe, is loaded with AI features, and has 24 hours of battery life.
In total, the upgraded laptop has significantly faster AI performance and faster graphics than the previous generation, a faster CPU, an enhanced Neural Engine, and higher memory bandwidth, according to Apple. It has a Liquid Retina XDR display, a 12MP Center Stage camera, a six-speaker sound system, and, of course, plenty of Apple Intelligence capabilities. Apple promises apps like Draw Things and LLMs will run even faster on the new laptop.
"MacBook Pro continues to be the world’s best pro laptop, and today, the 14-inch MacBook Pro gets even better with the arrival of the M5 chip," John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, said in a press release. "M5 marks the next big leap in AI for the Mac and delivers a huge boost in graphics performance, accelerating demanding workflows for everyone from students to creatives, developers to business professionals, and more. With its amazing performance, extraordinary battery life, and unrivaled display, M5 takes the new 14-inch MacBook Pro to another level."
Some fans on X have complained that the new laptop doesn't have much new besides the M5 chip — but that M5 chip might make all the difference.

Apple Vision Pro gets upgraded to the new M5 chip
Apple announced on Wednesday a new, upgraded version of its headset, the Apple Vision Pro. Don't expect major changes, however.
The biggest difference is that Apple swapped in its powerful M5 chip, which the company wrote in a press release would lead to "a leap forward in performance, improved display rendering, faster AI-powered workflows, and extended battery life."
“With the breakthrough performance of M5, the latest Apple Vision Pro delivers faster performance, sharper details throughout the system, and even more battery life, setting a new standard for what’s possible in spatial computing,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of worldwide product marketing, in a press release.
SEE ALSO: Apple launches iPad Pro with powerful, new M5 chipIn general, the new M5-powered Vision Pro promises smoother visuals, quicker load times, and, Apple hopes, an improved, more immersive experience. The company promised, for instance, that the M5 chip means the Vision Pro now "renders 10 percent more pixels on the custom micro-OLED displays compared to the previous generation, resulting in a sharper image with crisper text and more detailed visuals"
The company also introduced a new Dual Knit Band, which is aimed at improving comfort while wearing the headset. Instead of just one strap, it now has two, which fit snugly to the top and bottom of a user's head. The idea is that a user can "make fine-tuned adjustments to achieve their ideal fit." The Dual Knit Band can also be bought separately and fits with the previous generation of the Vision Pro.
The Apple Vision Pro with the M5 chip starts at $3,499, and is available with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities. It went on sale Wednesday in most markets, including the U.S. The Dual Knit Band is available to buy separately for $99.
Apple launches iPad Pro with powerful, new M5 chip
Apple's new iPad Pro is here, and it's one of the first devices to get the company's new M5 chip.
The new chip is significantly more powerful in the context of AI workloads; Apple says the new iPad Pro has 3.5x the AI performance of its predecessor.
The M5 chip, which has up to 10 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, and 16 Neural Engine cores, also boosts CPU and graphics performance. Apple says the new iPad Pro has four times the graphics performance compared to the iPad Pro with the M4 chip.
Other improvements include more RAM (up to 12GB of unified memory), faster memory bandwidth, 2x faster storage read and write speeds, and faster charging.
The new iPad Pro is available in black and silver. Credit: AppleApple also equipped the new iPad Pro with its C1X cellular modem which offers up to 50 percent faster cellular data performance, as well as Apple's new N1 wireless chip.
Outside, the new iPad Pro devices haven't changed all that much. You still get a choice between an 11-inch and a 13-inch model, both of which are very thin (5.3mm and 5.1mm, respectively). Both tablets have Apple's Ultra Retina XDR display, with a tandem OLED that enables very high brightness; Apple says the new iPad Pro has up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR.

This saves you $52 off their usual retail price of $249, which is still a worthy discount to jump on while it's still available. The AirPods Pro 2 are certainly worth the investment as well, even if the AirPods Pro 3 are out in the world right now.

They offer Active Noise Cancellation (for fully blocking out sounds), Transparency mode (which lets some sounds in while you're listening), and Adaptive Audio (which works as a blend of the other two features, depending on the environment you're in).
The silicone tips on these earbuds are an extra help in keeping noise out as they create a seal when placed in your ear. This also helps them stay in place a bit easier, which is good news if you're wearing them while you're working out or exploring outside.

Stephen Colbert has a brutal response to Trumps Time magazine cover shot
A cover on Time magazine paired with a positive story should be something for a president to celebrate, but Trump's recent inclusion doesn't seem to have gone down too well.
The reason? A not-exactly-flattering close-up photo of the president taken from an upwards angle, which he was quick to moan about on TruthSocial.
"I never liked taking pictures from underneath angles, but this is a super bad picture, and deserves to be called out," Trump wrote. "What are they doing, and why?"
Colbert's response, meanwhile, is a bit more brutal.
"Worst Georgia O'Keeffe ever," he says. "There's a lot going on there. It's like one of those optical illusions where you can't tell if it's an old woman or a young ballsack."
Elsewhere, Jimmy Kimmel was also quick to gleefully mock the image and Trump's reaction to it.
Waymos driverless taxis are coming to London
Waymo has taken the Tesla Robotaxi threat seriously.
On Wednesday, the company announced it's launching its autonomous ride-hailing service in London in 2026.
The service will be offered, in truly British fashion, via a fleet of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. Customers will be able to hail them via Waymo's app, and the company highlighted the fact that its cars will operate without a human behind the wheel.
There's no word on which areas Waymo's service will cover, though Waymo said it plans to serve Londoners and the city's "millions of visitors" next year. The company's official FAQ for London says it's conducting "extensive trials and safety validation work across select boroughs of London."
Fun fact: The Waymo cars in London will have the steering wheel on the left side, as the company will use its existing fleet of Jagaur I-PACE cars which were originally built for U.S. operations. It shouldn't matter too much as there will be no driver in the seat, and the company says its operators which monitor the system are "trained to operate a left-hand drive vehicle safely on UK roads."
SEE ALSO: Self driving taxis may be coming to NYC, as Waymo wins first AV testing permitThis isn't the first time Waymo has expanded internationally; the company already announced it will launch in Tokyo, besides a host of cities in the U.S. where it's already operational. But it appears to have accelerated its expansion following the launch of Tesla Robotaxi, which currently operates in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is the ideal robot vacuum if you want floor cleaning taking off your to-do list entirely. It vacuums, it mops, and it keeps itself clean, so other than occasional emptying of dirt, there's nothing for you to do. The vacuuming is powerful too, combining BLAST Airflow with 16,600Pa suction, so you get a much stronger performance on carpets and more effective removal of dust, pet hair, and debris. It even has anti-tangle brushes which prevent hair from wrapping around the rollers, saving you from spending ages removing hairs and detangling the brushes.
SEE ALSO: On paper, the Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller is the apex robot vacuum. Here's what I think of it so far.And to prevent any accidents, the Triple Lift System automatically adjusts the main brush, side brush, and mop depending on the surface of the floor, lifting the mop on carpets and raising the side brush for large debris.
The maintenance is a breeze too, its docking station basically takes care of everything. It refills the water tank, washes and dries the mop, and dispenses cleaning solution for up to 150 days. And it handles its own navigation thanks to the AIVI 3D 3.0 and LiDAR mapping. This stops the vacuum from bumping into furniture, allows it to map your home, and target areas that are typically dirtier.
