Inspired by nature, this robot morphs to overcome almost any obstacle
GOAT is a shape-shifting robot designed to move across almost any terrain by changing its form in real time. It can switch between a flat, rover-like mode for driving and a spherical mode for rolling, saving energy and adapting to different environments. Inspired by animals, GOAT’s flexible design allows it to navigate obstacles without complex sensors, relying instead on simple navigation and its ability to work with the environment. With potential applications in disaster response, environmental monitoring, and even space exploration, GOAT represents a new approach to robotic movement.
The internet is mourning Forever 21
Forever 21? More like Never 21, am I right, fellas?
According to CNBC, the fast-fashion company filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in six years and plans to close all its U.S. stores. People online are devastated. It's the end of an era, and Forever 21 — and the internet — are blaming other fast-fashion retailers like Shein and Temu.

"Certain non-U.S. online retailers that compete with the Debtors, such as Temu and Shein, have taken advantage of this exemption and, therefore, have been able to pass significant savings onto consumers," Stephen Coulombe, the operating company’s co-chief restructuring officer, wrote, according to CNBC. "Consequently, retailers that must pay duties and tariffs to purchase product for their stores and warehouses in the United States, such as the Company, have been undercut."
Of course, despite Forever 21 blaming Shein and Temu, it is also fast fashion. All of these companies exploit labor, have disastrous effects on the climate, and encourage overconsumption. According to Business Insider, the average person bought 60 percent more clothing in 2014 than they did in 2000, but they kept the pieces half as long.
Greenpop reported that about 80 billion pieces of clothing are bought every year, a 400 percent increase from two decades ago. However, according to Human Rights Pulse, the vast majority of those pieces, around 85 percent, end up in landfills, leading to mass human rights violations.

Assassins Creed Shadows is the best one in years, sometimes in spite of itself
It feels like there’s about a 100:1 ratio of negative-to-positive news headlines around Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Just this week, developers have been told internally to not talk about working on the game, lest they face harassment. At the same time, publisher Ubisoft is desperately fighting off talks of a corporate merger amidst investor troubles.
I’d prefer not to contribute to that because I think this is the best Assassin’s Creed game in a while, probably at least since 2016’s Origins. After a little more than 30 hours with this gargantuan stabbing simulator, my only real problem with Shadows is that it often feels like a giant boulder being held delicately in place by a single plank of wood.
This is a big and beautiful game that’s also, unfortunately, buggy enough that I have to write about it. Assassin’s Creed Shadows doesn’t totally upend the series formula and turn it into something else, but its dual-protagonist structure, open-ended design, and series-best stealth mechanics make it a fun tour through history, sometimes in spite of itself.
SEE ALSO: 'Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition' review: A forgotten classic is back with a vengeance Shadows gets back to what matters Naoe is rad. Credit: Ubisoft/SteamAs you may or may not be aware by now, the main distinction Shadows has over most other AC games is that it has two playable protagonists. 2015’s Syndicate also did this, but it kinda sucked; one of the playable heroes in that game was a doofus in a top hat who looked like a nerdcore rapper and was, for reasons I cannot imagine, the one you had to play as in most story missions.
Shadows executes this idea approximately ten thousand times better than Syndicate did. The female shinobi Naoe joins with the African slave-turned-samurai Yasuke (a real historical man, a first for an AC protagonist) to take down all the evildoers who are subjugating the people of 16th-century Japan, and maybe get some revenge along the way. Like the rest of the series, Shadows takes itself pretty seriously in its storytelling and is, in a word, a little swagless. There are times when it tries to include stylistic visual or musical flourishes, which I appreciate, but this isn’t Ninja Gaiden.
Regardless, once you get past a lengthy (it took me close to 15 hours) opening chapter, Shadows opens up. After that, you can switch between Naoe and Yasuke at will from the pause menu, and play almost any mission as whoever you want. Yasuke is a big brute who can unlock doors by sprinting through them and murder guys with a variety of cool weapons, while Naoe is easily the most lithe and nimble protagonist the series has ever had, making her perfect for sneaking around.
Yasuke is also pretty rad. Credit: Ubisoft/SteamAllowing players to tackle most objectives with whichever character they want is a big step up from Syndicate, and it also doesn’t hurt that Yasuke and Naoe are both very cool. As a nice bonus, this is the best pure stealth game in the Assassin’s Creed series when you’re playing as Naoe. Ubisoft has added a bunch of fun variables you have to think about: enemies who can see from much farther away, walking surfaces that make more noise than others, dynamic weather that can mask your movements, the ability to go prone, and shadows that can make you invisible in the right circumstances.
All of that combined with Naoe’s fun arsenal of ninja moves and tools makes her an absolute joy to play. Snooping around a big castle while meticulously stabbing everyone in your way is the best it’s ever been here. Yasuke’s alright, too, if you’d rather fight your way through challenges, but that’s not really how I like to play these games. I appreciate that the option is there for other people, though.
I would say the most interesting thing about Shadows from a design standpoint is how freeform it is after that opening chapter. There are suggested story missions for you to do, but you can also do things in basically any order you want. I’ve stumbled onto story missions earlier than I was supposed to, totally by accident, which is awesome. Shadows also doesn’t put specific waypoints on the map for mission objectives; instead, you have to assign scouts to find the objectives based on hints the game gives you.
The best part of all of this is that a huge amount of missions revolve around assassinating people. In 30 hours, I have not done a single tailing or escorting mission. There are tons of optional targets who provide interesting, fun challenges and give excellent gear as rewards for taking them down. This is the first AC game in a long time (aside from the more focused offshoot Mirage) where assassination is the main thing you’re doing most of the time. It’s cool.
It just doesn’t work all the time I love crawling around. Credit: Ubisoft/SteamAssassin’s Creed Shadows is a very good Assassin’s Creed game, with one very problematic quality: During the review period, it had a bad habit of rendering itself unplayable from time to time.
To be more specific, Shadows had a nasty problem for me where playing for longer than 60 to 90 minutes at a time made a bunch of weird crap start happening. Load times (which are normally very snappy) became several minutes long in some cases, while the UI would take forever to load once I was back in gameplay. Additionally, all menus slowed to a crawl. At its worst, there was one instance where the act of pausing the game and hitting the save button, which normally takes about 10 seconds, took at least five minutes.
This happened to me during a flashback story mission, which created other problems on top of itself. At one point, a cutscene just decided not to trigger, leaving me perpetually stuck between four invisible walls, unable to continue the game until I reloaded my last checkpoint.
Yes, you can still do this. Credit: Ubisoft/SteamA couple of caveats are necessary here. First, I’m playing on a PS5 Pro and have no idea if this is a problem anyone else has had on any other platforms. I should also mention the game looks beautiful and runs fantastically in that format aside from this bug. Second, there’s every possibility that by the time regular people have their hands on Shadows, this has been fixed. But I can’t just not mention something so disruptive that’s also so easy to recreate.
I am no software engineer, so I don’t know if this is a quick fix for Ubisoft or not. Given the game’s multiple delays, it really feels like Shadows is coming in a little hot. I don’t think this should be enough to dissuade anyone from playing Shadows by itself, but it’s worth knowing about.
Despite all of that, my first 30 hours with Shadows have been pretty positive. This game feels enormous, like I could potentially play 30 more hours. Maybe it’ll get old before then, maybe it won’t. But I can confirm that the people who are mad because Ubisoft made Assassin’s Creed “woke” or whatever are morons who will be missing out on a good game.

Nvidia keynote livestream: Watch CEO Jensen Huang at the GPU Technology Conference today
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is set to deliver remarks on Tuesday. It's widely expected he'll share details on the company's latest chips used in artificial intelligence.
Huang is scheduled to speak 1 p.m. ET. You can watch his keynote address on YouTube or embedded below.
We've covered the latest rumors surrounding Nvidia's forthcoming product releases, but lots more is expected from Huang's remarks at Nvidia's GTC conference on Tuesday. Huang is expected to announced the Blackwell Ultra, a premium version of its flagship AI chip, as well as news about the company's next GPU platform.
The tech world and Wall Street will certainly be interested in Huang's keynote. The sudden rise of China's AI startup DeepSeek sparked a sharp fall in Nvidia's share price at the beginning of this year. The company's plans moving forward could certainly inspire a rise or fall amid that shift in the market.
Roomba deals are bleak at Amazons spring sale so far
Amazon's decision to ghost its acquisition of iRobot in January 2024 hasn't kept Roombas from participating in any of Amazon's big sale events. Its upcoming Big Spring Sale (from March 25 to 31) will probably be no different, though Roomba deals are trickling in slower than robot vacuums on sale from other brands.
SEE ALSO: The Roborock Saros 10R aces one thing that most other robot vacuums can'tEither way, Amazon's Big Spring Sale might not be the wisest time to buy a Roomba this year. It just so happens that iRobot casually completely overhauled the Roomba lineup in the middle of March, with a fleet of new Roombas becoming available to purchase just two days before Amazon's sale starts.
This heavily deviates from iRobot's typical release schedule. Could it be an attempt to mitigate iRobot's increasingly bleak financial situation as of late? Unclear, but I do know that iRobot finally closed most of the gaps its previous lineup had, feature-wise and cost-efficiency wise — so opting for one of those may be a smarter purchase, even if they're at full price. Only a few older Roombas on sale now would be a worthwhile purchase over these new packed ones (especially when robot vacuums on sale from Roborock and Dreame have more features for less money).
I'm tracking the worthwhile Roomba deals at Amazon's Big Spring Sale below, and will give a specific shout out if any deals pop up that'd be worthwhile over another brand. Note: Any deal marked with a 🔥 has dropped to a record-low price at Amazon.

Amazon has a lot of Apple Watch deals ahead of its Big Spring Sale, but shoppers should still wait to buy
Amazon is officially hosting its second-ever Big Spring Sale from March 25 to 31. While the event mainly revolves around deals on warm-weather essentials and cleaning products, Mashable's Shopping team also expects it to prompt some of the season's best prices on Apple devices. That's what happened the last time we covered it, anyway.
SEE ALSO: Amazon announces Big Spring Sale dates and deals: Everything you need to knowWe've spotted some pretty good Apple deals on Amazon in the lead-up to the 2025 Big Spring Sale, but when it comes to when it comes to Apple Watches, most of those "best prices" seem to be holding out until the sale formally starts. While every configuration of the flagship Apple Watch Series 10 and the second-gen Apple Watch SE was technically on sale at the time of writing, they were still $30 away from their respective record lows. (Meanwhile, all colors and sizes of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 were stuck at full price.) We'd hold off on buying any model until Amazon revives the following discounts to match those previous all-timers:
At least $100 off the Apple Watch Series 10; at least $100 to $120 off the Apple Watch Series 10 with a Titanium case (depending on the size)
At least $80 off the Apple Watch SE
At least $120 off the Apple Watch Ultra 2
Don't worry about monitoring prices yourself — we've already got it handled. Read on for our running list of the best Apple Watch deals on Amazon ahead of its Big Spring Sale, which we plan on updating regularly in the lead-up to the event and during it. Note: If a model hits an all-time low, we'll mark it with a 🔥.

Heres when astronauts Butch and Suni are expected to splash down today
NASA's Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are world-renowned as the "stranded astronauts": Though they didn't endure the longest spaceflight, it would certainly seem that way based on news coverage.
Perhaps it was their association with Boeing, the beleaguered aerospace company that built the spaceship that made their story go viral. The veteran astronauts took Starliner to the International Space Station last summer. The pair was only supposed to be gone for eight days. Instead, the two were laid over in space for nine months.
Starliner experienced propulsion problems during their arrival last June, so NASA made a game-time decision to send the ship back to Earth empty and arrange for a different capsule to bring them home. In the interim, Wilmore and Williams were integrated as members of Crew-9, the team staffing the space station. Starliner's uncrewed landing, for what it's worth, touched down without a hitch.
The day of the astronauts' return finally has arrived, with the U.S. space agency moving up the schedule a tad to avoid some inclement weather expected later in the week. The SpaceX Dragon capsule bringing them home departed from the space station on schedule at 1:05 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 18, and the crew is on its way back home.
SEE ALSO: SpaceX is so close to turning its rocket headquarters into an actual city How to watch those "stuck" astronauts returnWilmore and Williams are now en route to a splashdown landing slated for 5:57 p.m. ET today, March 18. NASA plans to provide live coverage of the event, resuming with the ship's reentry into Earth's atmosphere. People can tune in for the broadcast at about 4:45 p.m. ET on March 18.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Though nine months is indeed a long time to be away from the planet, it's not the longest time any astronaut has spent in orbit. Just prior to the Starliner saga, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio experienced his own delayed return in 2023. Due to a tiny but concerning leak in the Russian Soyuz capsule set to bring him home, the two space agencies decided to arrange a different ride for Rubio and two cosmonauts to be safe.
The change of plans led to Rubio spending over a year in space — 371 days to be exact — the longest single spaceflight for an American. The Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov still owns the record for most consecutive time in space, at almost 438 days, but Rubio's stay surpassed U.S. astronaut Mark Vande Hei's previous record of 355 days, set in 2022.
Sunita "Suni" Williams, left, and Barry "Butch" Wilmore practice in a simulator at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Credit: NASA / Robert MarkowitzDespite continuous references to Wilmore and Williams as "stuck" and "stranded," even being dubbed as such by SpaceX's billionaire founder Elon Musk, the Dragon capsule intended to bring them and their crewmates home had been docked at the space station since September 2024. That means in the event of an emergency at the laboratory, orbiting 250 miles above Earth, the astronauts could have evacuated and returned home.
Still, rampant misinformation and politics seemed to hijack that narrative. Musk, who has since become President Donald Trump's most visible kitchen cabinet adviser, claimed in late January that SpaceX wanted to move up the astronauts’ return but that former President Joe Biden's administration was to blame for the delay. Trump has echoed those remarks.
Wilmore and Williams have achieved an unexpectedly high level of name recognition — known to most as simply Butch and Suni — but they are not traveling alone on this journey. With them will be crewmates Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.
Rather than deserted castaways, Wilmore and Williams remained at the lab to ensure it was fully staffed before Crew-10 arrived to relieve them. Those replacements — Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers, Takuya Onishi, and Kirill Peskov — successfully reached the space station on Sunday, March 16.
UPDATE: Mar. 18, 2025, 9:38 a.m. EDT This story has been updated to include the capsule's successful undocking from the International Space Station early Tuesday morning.

15+ robot vacuums on sale ahead of Amazons Big Spring Sale
So you didn't buy a robot vacuum on sale during Black Friday. If spring cleaning season — and the past few months of vacuuming by hand — has you regretting that, you're getting another chance with Amazon's upcoming Big Spring Sale.
Running March 25 to 31, the second annual Big Spring Sale should have a similar vibe to Prime Day when it comes to deals. The main difference is that most Big Spring Sale deals are open to anyone, regardless of whether you're a Prime member or not. (The ones that are exclusive to Prime members will be marked with a red "Prime Spring Deal" sticker.)
SEE ALSO: Need a robot vacuum that actually works on carpet? These 3 performed the best in my home.March is inherently an auspicious month for the past year's biggest robot vacuums to hit new record-low prices. That's because many of them have been upstaged by new flagship robot vacuums that were announced at CES in January. This year, iRobot (known for skipping CES) also deviated from its typical release schedule and completely overhauled the Roomba lineup in mid-March. The new Roombas happen to become available to buy two days before the Big Spring Sale starts, so it wouldn't be surprising to see better Roomba deals on older Roombas than we did during Black Friday.
We all know that Amazon never waits until the official calendar dates of its sales to drop deals, so I'm already tracking the best robot vacuum deals ahead of the kickoff on March 25. Note: Deals with a 🔥 next to them have dropped to record-low prices.
Best robot vacuums deals ahead of Amazon's spring sale Opens in a new window Credit: Roborock Roborock Qrevo Master 🔥 $799.99 at Amazon$1,399.99 Save $600 Get Deal Why we like it
More than 40% off a $1,399.99 robot vacuum just sounds like a good deal without any other context. And that's totally accurate. But my brain framed it in a way that makes it look like even more of a steal: You'd be getting a premium robot vacuum and mop combo that washes and dries its own mopping pads and avoids small obstacles and has a pet camera for half the price of the 2025 Roborock flagship I'm currently testing, the $1,599.99 Roborock Saros 10R.
I'm so psyched to see this new record-low price on my favorite vacuum from 2024. The biggest difference between the Qrevo Master and the new Saros 10R are suction power, as the Saros 10R doubles the Qrevo Master's 10,000 Pa. But the Qrevo Master was still more than powerful enough to do a sufficient job on my hard floors and rugs when I was testing it. However, it earned my top spot because of its attentive mopping. Spinning mopping pads are much more exhaustive scrubbers than one big, flat mopping pad in my book. One pad on the Qrevo Master even swings out on a hinge to mop along edges and in corners.

Unlocked phone deals are few and far between ahead of Amazons Big Spring Sale
If you're hoping to upgrade your phone this season, Amazon's Big Spring Sale could be your best opportunity to snag one at a discount. Save yourself the hassle of coordinating a trade-in or new data plan at a specific carrier and check out Amazon's list of unlocked phones instead. Typically, you'll be able to find a better deal.
The Big Spring Sale event doesn't officially kick off until March 25, though deals tend to start popping up days (weeks, even) in advance. So far, the unlocked phone deals are few and far between, but you can already grab Samsung's new S25 Ultra at a record-low price. Google Pixel and Motorola deals are also trickling in, but we think the deals will get better closer to the event. Apple iPhones rarely (if ever) go on sale during Amazon shopping events, but we'll never say never.
Mashable's shopping team will be keeping our eyes peeled for all the best unlocked phone deals that appear leading up to (and during) the Big Spring Sale. Keep checking back if you don't see the phone you want just yet.
Note: Deals with a 🔥 next to them have dropped to record-low prices.

Just announced at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event in January, the Galaxy S25 Ultra upgrades the RAM, camera, and processor compared to the S24 series. It also features a whole lot more AI, for better or worse. It doesn't look too much different than the S24 Ultra, but it'll wow you in terms of internal updates. And that's saying something, considering how great the S24 already was. At $1,149.97, the S25 Ultra with 512GB of storage is down to a new record low.

How to protect your mental health while using dating apps
Navigating the modern dating landscape has become increasingly challenging, with many people experiencing heightened stress and dissatisfaction. Studies have shown that overall happiness and life satisfaction have declined, particularly among young people, since the rise of smartphones and social media. Dating apps are a small (but mighty) part of that correlation. The pressure to constantly be available, maintain an online presence, and keep up with dating apps can take a significant toll on our mental wellbeing.
The proliferation of dating apps has undeniably changed how we seek romantic connections. While they provide convenience and access to a vast pool of potential partners, they also introduce new stressors. In fact, some research suggests that users of swipe-based dating apps report higher levels of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress compared to non-users.
The gamified nature of these apps can make dating feel more like a never-ending cycle of validation-seeking rather than a genuine attempt to connect. Many academics and journalists in the dating space have pointed out that this creates selfish dating behaviour, in what author and academic Bell Hooks describes in All About Love as “me culture,” wherein people see connection as being all about them and their needs solely.
Often, daters are tempted to dip out. And who can blame them? But society continuously reinforces the idea that finding a romantic partner is a milestone everyone should strive for, urging individuals to "get out there" and persistently seek "the one." For some people, this is a genuine personal desire, too. In fact, half of singles still want to find their life partner. Since most relationships begin on dating apps now, how can we use them in a healthy way? A way that doesn’t feel like relentless pressure and overwhelm?
Set boundaries and manage expectationsThe pressure from online dating can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and burnout, especially when you’re not seeing the connections you expected. It’s vital to recognise that taking breaks from dating is not only acceptable but necessary for mental wellbeing. If dating starts to feel like an obligation or a chore, rather than something enjoyable, stepping back and focusing on self-care can be the healthiest decision.
When starting out, setting clear intentions about what you want from online dating can make a huge difference. Are you looking for something casual, serious, or just open to meeting new people? Establishing your goals helps manage expectations and reduces frustration.
SEE ALSO: How does orientation affect the dating app experience?Anna Hint, a dating expert at the Pure app, encourages people to avoid feeling pressured to be constantly available. She explains, “You have to do things at your own pace. Especially if you feel overwhelmed, take your time, put yourself first. Just because we have our phones with us 24/7, this doesn’t make us available all the time, nor should we feel pressured about this.” Dating should never feel like a job, where you’re racing to respond to every message or keeping up with constant notifications.
Research from dating app Bumble, shared with Mashable over email, highlights the trend of “slow-dating,” where singles are more considerate about how much they date, prioritising quality over quantity. Almost one in three (31 percent) singles are now practicing slow-dating, particularly women, with 36 percent seeking partners who value time and self-care. This shift shows that many people are recognising the mental health implications of excessive swiping and are choosing a more mindful approach.
Limit time spent on appsWhile dating apps offer excitement, it's easy to get caught in a cycle of endless swiping and chatting. Before you know it, hours have passed, and it starts to feel draining. Technology can be a double-edged sword — it offers convenience but also fuels compulsive behaviours that may negatively impact mental health.
SEE ALSO: How to set boundaries in the early stages of datingAnnabelle Knight, a sex and relationships expert at Lovehoney, advises setting limits. “If you find yourself constantly checking the app, feeling distracted by it when you’re trying to focus on work, hobbies, or socialising in real life, that’s a sign you might be spending too much time on it.”
Using smartphone tools to track and limit app usage can be a helpful way to maintain a healthy balance. Too much time spent swiping can lead to burnout or feelings of inadequacy, especially when comparing yourself to other users. Limiting your app time can protect your mental health by preventing dating apps from taking over your day-to-day life.
Know when to take a breakRecognising when dating apps are affecting your mental well-being is crucial. If you notice yourself feeling emotionally exhausted, experiencing increased anxiety, or relying on external validation from matches, it may be time to take a step back.
Hint says, “If you feel like you are way too dependent on external approval, likes, and constant compliments... maybe it’s time to take a break and actually focus on yourself.”
SEE ALSO: How to stop caring what people think about youTaking a break isn’t about giving up — it’s about preserving your mental wellbeing. If swiping feels like an obligation rather than something enjoyable, deactivate your profile and focus on self-care. Spend time with friends, take up hobbies, or get outdoors. Remember, dating should be fun, not a source of anxiety.
For those with a pre-existing mental health condition, understanding when to take a break from the dating apps is even more crucial. One survey found that nearly half of individuals with existing mood disorders experienced worsening depression due to online dating. However, some research shows that those with mental health conditions can also alleviate symptoms through online dating, as they’re getting themselves out there, expanding their network, and interacting with people. With something as complex as mental health conditions, it’s hard to say what the impact of dating apps will be, as we all experience mental health so differently.
This does mean that extra caution should be taken with dating apps for those with diagnosed mental health conditions, though. Consulting a medical professional about how their condition might uniquely impact dating and identifying red flags can be crucial for emotional safety.
If you do have a mental health condition, taking breaks can be even more essential. Certain symptoms, such as sensitivity to rejection or difficulty managing emotions, can be exacerbated by the unpredictability of dating apps. Seeking guidance from a therapist or mental health professional about how to navigate dating in a way that protects your mental health can be incredibly beneficial.
How to handle rejectionWith any quest for love — on or offline — disappointment is going to be part of the journey. It shouldn’t knock your confidence, though. As Knight points out, “Rejection is part of the dating app experience, but it doesn’t define your worth. Not every match is meant to be. It’s not personal, just part of the process.”
SEE ALSO: How to separate romantic rejection from your self-worthRather than viewing rejection as a reflection of your value, consider it a step closer to finding someone who’s the right fit. If you’re feeling down, take a break and reconnect with activities that make you feel good about yourself. It’s essential to lean on your support network during tough times. Sharing your experiences with friends or loved ones can help keep your emotions in perspective, and they’ll remind you that your worth is not tied to app outcomes.
Create a positive experienceWhile dating apps can expose us to judgment, criticism, and negative interactions, there are ways to create a more positive experience. Curating your matches by reading profiles carefully and only engaging with people who genuinely interest you can lead to more meaningful connections. Hint says, “Don’t take things too seriously before you even meet in person... It’s crucial to understand that your value should not be measured by what someone online says about you.”
If something feels off or a conversation turns sour, don’t hesitate to cut it off. Most dating apps provide tools to block or report users who engage in inappropriate or harmful behaviour. Protecting your mental health means maintaining control over who you interact with.
It’s easy to present an idealised version of yourself online, but maintaining authenticity can help you form real connections and reduce anxiety. Knight explains that keeping realistic expectations can make the whole experience more enjoyable. “Go in with an open mind and focus on getting to know someone without putting too much pressure on the outcome. Remember that real connections take time,” she advises.
Trying to maintain a facade can be stressful, and being yourself is key to fostering genuine relationships. Keep in mind that dating apps are just one way to meet people. They’re not the only way. Engaging in other social activities can alleviate the pressure and make dating apps a fun part of a broader social life.
Your mental health is the most important thing to take care of during online dating. Bumble found that one in four (29 percent) UK singles are now actively avoiding people who treat dating like a checklist exercise, opting for more mindful, considerate connections. To protect your own wellbeing, make time for hobbies, exercise, and spending time with loved ones—things that give you joy outside of dating.
As Hint puts it, “To have a healthy relationship with dating, we need to have a healthy relationship with ourselves and who we are.”
