SpaceX launched its first Starship since an accident this summer that caused one of the rockets to explode on a test stand at the company's headquarters in southern Texas. 

But the rocket made an immense comeback on Tuesday, successfully reaching space and coasting halfway around the world before dropping softly into the Indian Ocean as planned.

The test was SpaceX's 10th Starship launch, following a recent succession of failures and mishaps for the gargantuan prototype. 

Starship, a 400-foot-tall, super-heavy-lift rocket and spaceship, blasted off from SpaceX's private space port in Starbase, Texas, which is now an official city, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The event was broadcast on both SpaceX's website and X, the social platform acquired by the business' billionaire founder Elon Musk. It came two days after SpaceX's initial launch attempt, when controllers discovered a liquid oxygen fuel leak in the ground systems, Musk said on X. The company scrubbed another try on Monday due to weather risks.

By all appearances, Starship aced its one-hour test, suffering only minor damage to a flap and the aft skirt during the inferno of reentering Earth's atmosphere.

"We're kind of being mean to this Starship a little bit," said Dan Huot, a SpaceX spokesperson and launch commentator. "We're really trying to put it through the paces and kind of poke on what some of its weak points are."

The primary goals this time around for SpaceX were to test new landing maneuvers for the booster in the Gulf of Mexico, including experiments with different engine configurations to study how backups perform during landing burns. The ship also released eight dummy Starlink satellites that were stacked and deployed like a Pez dispenser within the ship. It was the first time a Starship ever simulated a payload delivery in space.

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL," Huot said as the payload demonstration began, referencing a famous line from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In addition to that exercise, the ship successfully relit an engine while coasting through space.

SpaceX has faced public scrutiny for its previous Starship test failures. Its leadership insists that the company's rapid break-it-fix-it strategy is all part of the company's unique iterative philosophy — in stark contrast with NASA's much slower and careful approach.

The accident on June 18 happened during a ground test as a Starship was being fueled. A high-pressure nitrogen tank with undetected damage had burst, according to a company statement, causing the rocket to break apart and catch fire. No one was hurt in the incident, and SpaceX has since changed inspection and safety procedures.

That explosion followed a string of inflight failures that were setbacks from earlier progress. During the last launch on May 27, the booster got the upper stage into space, but it didn't survive its fall back toward Earth. Engineers say they flew the booster at a steeper angle than usual to test its limits, which put too much stress on part of the fuel system and caused it to break apart. 

Meanwhile, the ship kept flying but developed a fuel leak inside the nose cone. This caused pressure problems that prevented it from releasing mock satellites and completing an engine restart in space. The ship eventually lost control and burned up over the ocean. Engineers traced the problem to a faulty part in the fuel system. The previous two tests — flights 7 and 8 — failed even earlier during the ascent stage.

But Tuesday's success signals the Starship program is back on track.

"We probably gave it a little bit of extra time in the oven but made it all the way through re-entry," Huot said. "Promised maximum excitement. Starship delivered."

NASA will rely on SpaceX to ferry astronauts to the moon under a $4.2 billion contract. The plan is for a modified Starship to get the Artemis III and IV crews from the orbiting Orion spacecraft to the lunar surface. But before that can happen, SpaceX has to master refueling its spaceship in space. 

Starship is also a passion project for Musk, who wants to eventually send humans to Mars and build a self-sustaining city on the Red Planet.

"Life cannot just be about solving one tragic problem after another. There must be also reasons to get up in the morning and be excited about the future," Musk said on Monday. "A future where we are a spacefaring civilization is infinitely more exciting than one where we are not."

Tesla has expanded its Robotaxi coverage area in Austin for the third time in just two months.

The company first launched the Robotaxi service in June, initially covering just a tiny, 22 square mile area in southern Austin. Now, with this latest increase, Tesla covers 173 square miles in Austin, and the company says it's also increased the number of available cars by 50 percent.

This is how we get full moons, half moons, and moons that appear completely invisible. There are eight main moon phases, and they follow a repeating cycle:

New Moon - The moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

Despite the irritating over-confidence of Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), his little hybrid experiment in Alien: Earth hasn't exactly been smooth sailing so far, has it?

The latest in a mounting number of issues is poor old Slightly (Adarsh Gourav) being groomed into alien theft by Morrow (Babou Ceesay), who is able to speak directly into Slightly's mind after working some cyborg magic on him during their meeting on the crashed Maginot spaceship.

The question is, why isn't Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant), who appears to be aware that something is going on with Slightly, doing anything to stop it? Let's unpack.

Wandering away from the facility to sit on a rock by himself, Slightly has an unnerving conversation with Morrow in which the latter tries to convince him to steal a Xenomorph egg.

"If that egg belongs to me and somebody takes it, how can it be wrong to take it back?" growls Morrow.

"They fixed me here, you know," says Slightly. "Like Boy Kavalier. This is my home..."

"Now you're talking about loyalty. That's a very different principle. People do all kinds of terrible things in the name of loyalty. No, if you want to do the moral thing, you'll help me get back what you stole."

Later, Morrow turns the screw even tighter by threatening to hurt Slightly's family if he doesn't do as he's told. But the question is, why doesn't Kirsh — who appears to be at least somewhat aware of Morrow's scheming — do anything to help?

Why doesn't Kirsh intervene?

We know Kirsh knows something is going on because we see him watching a recording of Slightly's interaction on the ship with Morrow, where the latter uses his robotic arm to implant something into Slightly's neck. But instead of rushing to Slightly and offering help, Kirsh settles for a crypto conversation about the "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkey statues in Slightly's room.

"If I did something evil, would you report me?" asks Kirsh. "If I hurt, or caused others to be hurt, would you do something to stop me or would you look the other way?"

Slightly eventually says that he would stand up for his friends, to which Kirsh replies, "Good."

But what, exactly, does this interaction mean?

Well, it seems that Kirsh — despite being aware that Slightly may be under Morrow's influence — wants to keep his cards close to his chest. He doesn't want Morrow to know that he knows, but at the same time, he wants to get a sense of where Slightly's loyalties lie. His question about the monkeys is basically a test to see how likely Slightly might be to go against Prodigy after everything they've done for him.

Our best guess? Kirsh will continue to keep a close eye on Slightly and use his knowledge against Morrow when he thinks the time is right.

Anthropic is easing into the AI browser war with a Claude browser extension for Chrome.

On Tuesday, the AI company announced a pilot program for a version of Claude that can browse the web on the user's behalf. The pilot will only be available to 1,000 members of the Claude Max plan, a subscription tier for power users that costs $200 a month. Anthropic says it's treading cautiously to address the safety and security risks.

A demo video for the Claude extension shows Claude in the sidebar of the Chrome window taking on various tasks. This includes finding house listings that match specific criteria on Zillow, summarizing comments in a Google Doc, and adding a noodle dish to a DoorDash cart. This is similar to other AI browsers like Perplexity Comet or web browsing agents like ChatGPT agent.

AI browsers are the latest frontier for AI companies to claim. AI models are becoming advanced enough to automate certain tasks online through search and multi-step reasoning.

But handing over the reins to a bot opens up a whole new realm of security risks. In addition to user error, you know have to worry about agent error. What if a browsing agent accidentally sends an unfinished email draft or orders the wrong product?

However, the biggest risk, according to Anthropic, is prompt injection attacks. These attacks come from malicious actors who hide prompts inside emails, documents, or websites to try and trick the model into doing something it shouldn't.

Without safety mitigations applied, Anthropic said Claude fell prey to prompt injection attacks 23 percent of the time. To combat this, Anthropic has added safety mitigations like giving users the ability to revoke Claude's access to sites at any time and confirm with the user before taking any high-risk action. That includes sending emails or making purchases.

You can sign up for the waitlist to join the Claude for Chrome pilot program. Anthropic is starting with 1,000 Max members and gradually rolling out the browser agent to more users based on pilot feedback.
