Report: OpenAI could leave California in last-ditch effort to avoid political scrutiny
Is OpenAI planning to leave California?
According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, the AI giant headed by Sam Altman has discussed the possibility of having to relocate out of The Golden State due to the laws surrounding nonprofit organizations and OpenAI's plan to restructure as a for-profit.
Roughly one year ago, OpenAI announced its plans to overhaul how the company is structured. OpenAI began as a nonprofit, but the organization's mission clearly changed as its AI chatbot ChatGPT took off. In September 2024, OpenAI said that it intended to restructure the nonprofit into a traditional for-profit company.
However, the blowback amongst its users and the tech community at large derailed parts of those plans. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Altman announced that OpenAI will instead structure itself into a for-profit company with the nonprofit organization retaining control over it.
OpenAI's attempt to appease everyone while still getting what it wanted has now been called into question. Other nonprofits, philanthropies, labor groups, and even OpenAI rivals like Meta and Elon Musk (who, until 2018, was on the nonprofit's board of directors) have pushed back against OpenAI's new arrangement, the WSJ noted, saying that OpenAI is violating the nonprofit's founding mission which in turn may be breaking California's charitable trust law.
Attorneys general in California and in Delaware are now investigating OpenAI’s plan to restructure to see if the AI giant is indeed breaking the law that regulates nonprofits, according to the WSJ. As a result of these investigations, OpenAI could be sued by the states or be required to pay a settlement as terms for a restructure.
OpenAI's conundrumDepending on what the Attorneys general do, OpenAI may be left with a tough decision, according to the WSJ.
OpenAI's investors could pull $19 billion from the company, under the condition that the financing would only be given if these backers received equity in the for-profit company. The way OpenAI is currently set up, the nonprofit group controls the company as a subsidiary and equity cannot be distributed in the same manner as if it was strictly run as a for-profit.
So, in order to receive those billions, which is roughly half of its total funding in the past year, OpenAI has discussed the possibility of leaving California. But, there is a problem there too for OpenAI. AI companies are throwing big salaries around in order to lure AI talent to their companies. Many AI researchers are based in San Francisco. AI companies like Anthropic seem to have no plans to leave California. The allure of not having to pack up and move their families out-of-state may be another way for OpenAI's rivals to convince their talent to make the jump.
OpenAI doesn't seem to really want to move out of California. The WSJ reports that the company has hired a team of lobbyists with close ties to Governor Gavin Newsom in hopes of avoiding any issues with its restructuring. But, depending on what these investigations turn up, they may not have much of a choice.
Hold onto your TikTok feed, because Google Veo 3 now offers vertical video
Brace yourselves, Veo 3 just became mobile-friendly.
Google's AI video model now supports the vertical video format in the Gemini API. Now, developers can create Veo 3 videos with the 9:16 aspect ratio, which is the vertical frame size for TikTok and Reels.
SEE ALSO: I tested Grok Imagine, and it's no match for Google Veo 3 or SoraThe update is for developers working with Veo 3 directly within the API. But Google has steadily introduced more Veo 3 features throughout various apps and products. Users can now turn images into videos with Veo 3 on the Gemini app and in Google Photos. Unlike other AI video generators, Veo 3 also generates audio, which has made it a popular choice for sharing hyperrealistic AI-generated street interviews and videos of AI creators.
All of these videos have been generated in a horizontal video format, or edited into vertical format with some other tool or extension. It's unclear whether vertical video support is coming to consumer-friendly tools like Gemini. If Veo 3-generated videos can be optimized for social by just about anyone, our feeds might explode with AI slop.
Mashable has contacted Google and will update this story with a response. For developers at least, they'll now be able to generate vertical videos directly within the prompt. In addition to vertical video support, Google also announced 1080p HD output and lower price per second on Veo 3 (now $0.40 per second) and Veo 3 Fast (now $0.15 per second) models.
Hurry — the Dyson Supersonic Nural dryer is $150 off as Best Buys deal of the day
SAVE $150: On Sept. 9, the Dyson Supersonic Nural is down to just $399.99 (reg. $549.99) as one of Best Buy's deals of the day. That means you have to act quick, as the savings will disappear at the day's end.

The Dyson Supersonic is the crown jewel of hair dryers — and its price tag certainly reflects that. While we do think the iconic hair dryer lives up to the hype, we often recommend dupes that can offer a similar experience without the steep price tag. Not everyone has $500+ to drop on a hair tool, after all. When it goes on sale, though, the dupes go out the window.
As of Sept. 9, the Dyson Supersonic Nural — the brand's newest and most superior dryer — is on sale for just $399.99 as one of Best Buy's deals of the day. That's $150 off its current list price of $549.99 and $100 cheaper than it is currently listed at Amazon. FWIW, it's also just $10 away from its best price ever.
There's a few essential things to note about this promotion. First, the $150 savings is only available on the strawberry bronze and blush pink model. All other color options are either sitting at full price or have a lesser discount. Second, as a deal of the day, this discount is here today, gone tomorrow. If you're interested in the Dyson Supersonic Nural, now's the time to grab it.
Dyson launched the Supersonic Nural in early 2024 with even more premium features than the original Supersonic. It comes with a scalp protect mode, upgraded attachments (including an excellent and unique diffuser), memory for preferred settings with said attachments, and pause detection. Mashable's Bethany Allard tested it out and said, "It certainly feels more intelligent, but not quite like a smart hair dryer."
At $399.99, the Supersonic Nural is in the same price bracket as some of the dupes we recommend. In other words, at this price, you can actually opt for the real thing. But hurry — the deal will expire at 1 a.m. ET.
Every iPhone getting iOS 26: See if yours is on the list
Apple is set to release a substantial new iOS version soon, but like always, some iPhones will be unable to run the operating system and will be functionally left behind by the Apple ecosystem.
Tim Cook and friends are expected to reveal the iOS 26 release date during the September Apple Event on Tuesday. The new version of iOS brings a host of new features, such as the new "Liquid Glass" design language, improved live translation, and a sorely needed reorganization of the Camera and Photos apps. As you may have noticed, we also jumped from iOS 18 to iOS 26, as Apple has adopted a new OS naming scheme that focuses on years rather than version numbers.
SEE ALSO: Apple Event 2025 live blog: Every 'awe-dropping' announcement, including iPhone 17However, this news comes with a bit of disappointment for some iPhone owners. Each new version of iOS represents a new group of older iPhones that will be effectively cut off from major software updates, thus incentivizing their owners to spend money on a newer iPhone instead. Here is the list of iPhones that support iOS 26, for those who are curious about the status of their older iPhones.
SEE ALSO: The iPhone 17 arrives today: See rumored specs, cameras, colors, and release date Every iPhone that supports iOS 26The list of iOS 26-compatible iPhones is as follows:
iPhone SE (second generation and beyond only)
iPhone 11, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 12, Mini, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 13, Mini, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 14, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 15, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 16, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max
iPhone 16e
You can go ahead and pencil in the as-yet-unannounced iPhone 17, too. That means every iPhone model older than iPhone 11 is out of luck here. iPhone X line owners who got iOS 18 last year will have to upgrade at some point if they want to take advantage of the new features iOS 26 brings to the table. It's also worth noting that any Apple Intelligence features will be limited even further to iPhone 15 and 16 models (until the 17 is inevitably announced, too).

SEE ALSO: Our 15 favorite Lego sets, sourced from actual Lego fansLego advent calendars may not create quite the pandemonium that a new Pokémon card pack drop does, but they definitely sell out — often, only to be restocked and discounted on, like, December 20. While many Lego lovers probably aren't complaining about getting to open 20 days' worth of mini figures in one sitting, imagine having one of these advent calendars ready to go before December starts.
Our favorite advent calendar on sale has to be the Star Wars one. The Lego Star Wars hype is as real in 2025 as it's ever been, and honestly, we're just surprised to see any of the new Star Wars sets on sale so soon after release. It's not the $999.99 Death Star set that's coming out in October, but it'll tide the younglings over for now — or anyone who has a soft spot for mini figs, really. Everyone needs a BB-8 dressed as a snowman.
Slash $50 off the DJI Osmo Action 4 for your fall adventures

Sure, you always have a high-quality camera in your pocket, thanks to your smart phone. But it's not always the most practical way to snap photos and videos on the go. That's where a dedicated action camera comes in.
As of Sept. 9, the DJI Osmo Action 4 standard combo is down to just $249 at Amazon. While that's not the cheapest it's ever been, it still saves you 17% or $50 on the usual list price of $299. The standard combo comes with the waterproof action camera itself, plus one extreme battery, a horizontal-vertical protective frame, a quick-release adapter mount, a curved adhesive base, and more.
GoPro may be the gold standard when it comes to action cameras, but the DJI Osmo Action 4 "makes a good argument for buying an action camera that's not a GoPro," our friends at PCMag (also owned by Ziff Davis) said in their review. It can take on the elements (freeze resistant, waterproof up to 59 feet), has a clean and intuitive interface, lasts up to 2.5 hours per charge, has excellent digital stabilization, and excels in low light situations.
PCMag's reviewer adds that it would particularly suit content creators and vloggers over GoPro's Hero11 Black, thanks to its longer-lasting battery and better performance in dim settings. Even at full price, we think the DJI Osmo Action 4 is a worthy action camera; at $50 off, it's a steal.
Nouvelle Vague trailer: Richard Linklater pays tribute to Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave
With his upcoming film Nouvelle Vague, director Richard Linklater (Hit Man, Boyhood) transports viewers to Paris in 1959, amid the beginnings of the French New Wave film movement. Major figures in the movement included Cahiers du Cinéma film critics-turned-directors François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Jean-Luc Godard.
While Linklater's Nouvelle Vague is an ode to the entire French New Wave, he's focused on one film in particular: Godard's first feature, 1960's Breathless. Nouvelle Vague reimagines the making of this iconic film from Godard's (Guillaume Marbeck) initial aspirations to direct to the casting of American actor Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch).
SEE ALSO: 2025 fall movie preview: Every upcoming film you ought to know aboutWritten by Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo, with French adaptation by Michèle Halberstadt and Laetitia Masson, Nouvelle Vague had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May. It received positive reactions from critics, who praised Linklater's earnest homage to the French New Wave.
Nouvelle Vague is not Linklater's only project to be coming out in 2025. In addition to his ode to Godard, Linklater is also releasing Blue Moon, which reunites him with frequent collaborator Ethan Hawke. Hawke plays Lorenz Hart, songwriter and former creative partner of Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott) of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame. The biopic, which premiered at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival and went on to play at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, received critical acclaim. However, Mashable's Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko felt differently, calling the film "insufferable" in her review, while also noting that "Andrew Scott is the best part."
How will Linklater's Nouvelle Vague measure up to his other 2025 film?
Nouvelle Vague hits select theaters Oct. 31 before coming to Netflix Nov. 14.
Anthropic Claude can now create spreadsheets and slide decks for you
Claude can now do the tedious grunt work of creating files for you.
On Tuesday, Anthropic shared a new feature for Claude where users can ask it to create Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoints, Word documents, and PDFs directly within the chat. The new capability is available as a preview for Claude Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers, and Anthropic said it would be rolling out to Claude Pro users in the coming weeks.
Claude's ability to create and edit files on the user's behalf is an example of agentic AI, a term that the industry is buzzing about. AI models with so-called reasoning skills are able to break down multi-step tasks, and when connected to other apps and software, they can accomplish tasks outside of their app restraints. Anthropic's new feature works by giving Claude "access to a private computer environment where it can write code and run programs to produce the files and analyses you need."
Competitors have introduced similar agentic features. OpenAI's ChatGPT has an agent that can browse the web and similarly compile reports through accessing your calendar and files. Google's Project Mariner is a prototype exploring agentic web browsing, and then there are web browsers like Arc Dia and Perplexity Comet that can shop and add items to your cart.
But Anthropic's new feature is a little more straightforward in that you feed it data or instructions and it puts it all together in the desired format. In that sense, the closest comparison is a tool called Shortcut AI, which replicates an Excel spreadsheet page and automates all of the data input from a sidebar chatbot. Anthropic says users can ask Claude to perform tasks like creating a financial model in a spreadsheet from their raw data, turning a PDF into a PowerPoint, or generating reports with visual charts and written analysis.
To get started with the feature, go to Settings > Features > Experimental and enable the toggle that says "Upgraded file creation and analysis." From there can start asking Claude to make files using uploaded files or written prompts.
A note of caution to keep in mind with any chatbot: Be wary about sensitive information you're sharing. That's particularly important with Claude because Anthropic just updated its terms of use, saying it will use conversations for model training unless the user opts out. Users have until Sept. 28 to opt out, which they can do in their privacy settings by toggling off "Help improve Claude."
Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.
Song Sung Blue trailer: Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson form a Neil Diamond cover band
Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson embrace their inner Neil Diamond in the upcoming musical film Song Sung Blue.
Written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name), the film is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name (which, in turn, shares a name with a 1972 Diamond song). It followed musicians Mike and Claire Sardina, who rose to fame as the Neil Diamond/Patsy Cline tribute act Lightning & Thunder. (He's Lightning, she's Thunder.)
SEE ALSO: 2025 fall movie preview: Every upcoming film you ought to know aboutJackman and Hudson take on the roles of Mike and Claire in Brewer's Song Sung Blue, charting their journey from struggling musicians to local icons. Along the way, the two fall in love, get married, and sing a ton of Neil Diamond songs. The film's first trailer features Hudson and Jackman singing snippets of Diamond's "Cherry, Cherry" and, of course, "Sweet Caroline" — "bah, bah, bah" and all.
Neither Jackman nor Hudson are strangers to musicals: Jackman earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as Jean Valjean in 2012's Les Misérables, led 2017's hit The Greatest Showman, and has amassed an impressive array of stage credits, including his Tony-winning role in The Boy from Oz. Meanwhile, Hudson starred in Rob Marshall's 2009 film adaptation of Nine and absolutely devoured her role as NYADA instructor Cassandra July in Season 4 of Glee. Check out the full trailer above to see how their musical chops translate to their performances as the Sardinas.
Song Sung Blue also stars Michal Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, Fisher Stevens, and Jim Belushi.

The M4 MacBook Air earned a top spot on our list of the best laptops for 2025. It also happens to be our favorite MacBook for most people, even at full price. While most options have jumped back up in price since Labor Day, the 15-inch model with 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage is still chilling at its best-ever price of $1,199. Looking for a tablet that can not only double as a laptop, but actually rival it? The M4 iPad Pro is a beast. It "blew us away with its power efficiency, striking display, and breakneck performance," Mashable's reviewer writes. It packs an ultra-long battery life for creative tasks on the go. Don't worry, however, it didn't crash. The Apple Store typically goes down the morning of a big Apple Event as it updates for the new products set to be announced.
And Tuesday is going to be a big day for Apple fans. It's a near certainty the tech giant will announce the new iPhone 17, in various iterations, at its big "Awe Dropping" event scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. (Follow Mashable's live blog for all the latest developments throughout the day.)
If you fire up the Apple Store site, it reads: "Be right back. We’re making updates to the Apple Store. Check back soon." You can also click on an interactive Apple logo, if you're feeling antsy.
Credit: AppleRumors have swirled about the exact specs, colors, and details of the iPhone 17 lineup. Mashable has the latest updates ahead of the rapidly approaching event. But whatever the iPhone 17 actually looks like, you'll at least be able to check them out on the Apple Store site when it relaunches later Tuesday.
For more Apple event coverage, follow Mashable's live blog and get real-time updates on the iPhone 17, Apple Watch Series 11, and AirPods Pro 3 launch.
Shark released a cordless handheld stain remover that youll actually like getting out
OUT NOW: Shark announced the Shark StainForce cordless handheld stain cleaner on Sept. 9. It costs $199.99 and is available online now.

Are you or a loved one that friend who can't relax when someone's holding a drink near a light-colored couch? If so, you might be experiencing stainxiety (noun): The stress and panic that sets in when faced with tough stains, especially before hosting guests or during spill emergencies. Shark coined that term to introduce the newest member of the Shark cleaning squad: The Shark StainForce cordless stain cleaner. It was just released on Sept. 9 and costs $199.99 — though it seems to have already sold out on launch morning, you can sign up for restock alerts.
Credit: SharkMost of us have at least one stain in our home or car that we've just accepted as permanent. Maybe that's because the 15-pound carpet cleaner in the closet isn't as portable as advertised, or because we don't have room to store a carpet cleaner at all. The StainForce is a solution either way — it's cordless and no bigger than a handheld vacuum. (For reference, it weighs less than three pounds. That's less than half of the Bissell Little Green's or Shark StainStriker's weight, both of which are already touted as compact upholstery cleaners.)
SEE ALSO: Will the laser-equipped Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai solve Dyson's robot vacuum problem? The Shark StainForce gadget itself is accompanied by a proprietary spray bottle that keeps the included dual-activated cleaning solution separate until it's time to clean. The cleaning nozzle administers suction and liquid like any other carpet cleaner, just without the annoying tube. Dirty water is held in the same handle and can be emptied right into the sink.
Credit: SharkI said it before, and I'll say it again: People just want practical ways to clean their house. In a story from June, where I got my skepticism about some current robot vacuum innovations off my chest, I mentioned that Eufy is winning because its latest robot vacuums aren't newfangled for the sake of it. For example, the Eufy E28 is a robot vacuum and mop combo whose dock has a detachable carpet cleaner (though it still needs to be plugged in). Shark is clearly on the "streamlining stain removal" wavelength too — and if you aren't looking for a new vacuum right now, the StainForce is an easy addition to your cleaning closet that you won't dread getting out.

A24s The Smashing Machine trailer gives best look yet at Dwayne Johnson as Mark Kerr
Dwayne Johnson embodies MMA icon and UFC champion Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, with A24's new trailer giving the best look we've seen yet of the Fast and Furious Hollywood star and WWE legend in his much-anticipated role.
Written and directed by Uncut Gems' Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine tracks Kerr's career of tournaments and championships underpinned by personal turbulence. The trailer focuses on Kerr's relationship with his then-wife Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt, and his experience with substance abuse, all set to a dramatic version of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds."
Just from the two minutes of this trailer, it seems audiences are in for a few rounds of emotional upheaval with The Smashing Machine.
The Smashing Machine premiered at the Venice International Film Festival ahead of its theatrical debut on Oct. 3.
The iPhone 17 arrives today: See rumored specs, cameras, colors, and release date
It's September, which means it's new iPhone season, and the iPhone 17 rumor mill has been churning.
The Apple Event 2025 is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET), so we should probably stop, catch our breath, and review what we know so far. The tech world is eagerly awaiting the iPhone 17's arrival (and a whole slew of new Apple devices), but Apple could also drop some surprises at its "Awe-dropping" iPhone launch event.
As always, there have been plenty of iPhone 17 rumors over the past year. Some of them will undoubtedly be true, while others seem pretty sketchy. That's just how these launches go.
Don’t miss out on our latest stories: Add Mashable as a trusted news source in Google.
Let's not waste any more time. Here is everything we know, everything we think we know, and everything we know we don't know about the iPhone 17 so far.
What iPhone 17 models will we get?First up, let's establish exactly which iPhones we're expecting in September. This is speculative, but most Apple watchers believe we're getting four phones at the Apple Event 2025:
iPhone 17
iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 17 Air
Naturally, there will be a base iPhone 17 model. That's a given, as predictable as the sun setting at night. All indications point to the iPhone 17 getting Pro and Pro Max models, as well, which would be in line with previous Apple mobile releases from the past few years. It would be a real shock if Apple pivoted away from that.
SEE ALSO: iPhones, Macs, and iPads will get GPT-5 via Apple Intelligence. Here’s when it happens. What is the iPhone Air?It's the year of ultra-thin smartphones, and numerous leaks and rumors point to an ultra-thin model, potentially called the iPhone 17 Air. The Air could replace the Plus model that used to grace the iPhone lineup for the past few years, so instead of getting a bigger version of the base model, we'll get something that has an identity of its own.
We don't know exactly how big the Air will be, but leaks suggest it will measure in somewhere between 5 and 6mm of thickness. That would make it Apple's slimmest iPhone yet, putting it in competition with the recently released Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, a 5.8mm thick device.
iPhone 17 release dateThe rumors were correct: Apple's big reveal will happen on Tuesday, Sept. 9., starting at 10 a.m. PT.
9to5Mac also pointed out that Apple always places the official release date of each new iPhone on the Friday of the week after the launch event, so keep an eye on Friday, Sept. 19 for the new iPhone's official release date.
Over at Forbes, reporter David Phelan predicts the new iOS 26 update will officially arrive on Monday, Sept. 15 or Tuesday, Sept. 16.
iPhone 17 lineup: The specsThe day before Apple's iPhone event, a leaker claimed to have the official specs of the new iPhone 17 lineup, although that post was quickly deleted. Another leaker claimed to have the full battery breakdown. And these reports follow months of rumors and speculation.
Let's start with the displays. Prolific leaker Ice Universe (via 9to5Mac) reported all the way back in July 2024 that these would be the approximate display sizes for each new iPhone:
iPhone 17: 6.3-inch
iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.7-inch
iPhone 17 Air: 6.65-inch
Perhaps the most exciting rumor that's emerged about these new phones is that both the iPhone 17 and 17 Air will reportedly feature 120Hz displays, per MacRumors. Apple has frustratingly limited high refresh rates to its Pro phones for a few years now, even as budget Android phones like the Pixel 9a have had that feature for years. This would be a massive upgrade for Apple and would make the base and Air models even more appealing.
It's also expected that the new iPhones will have new A19 chips inside them. As in previous years, the base model will likely have a regular A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max models will have a more powerful A19 Pro chip powering them. Leaker Fixed focus digital on Weibo suggested the Air model will have a slightly downgraded version of the A19 Pro chip instead of a base A19, potentially giving it some additional juice over the base iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 line is also expected to cross the 5,000mAh battery capacity line for the first time, catching up with rivals like Samsung Galaxy.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. What about the cameras? Credit: Zain bin Awais / MashableAgain, we won't know the full, precise camera specs for the new iPhones until September, but there are some leaks to go off of for now.
Perhaps the biggest potential development this year is a selfie cam upgrade for the new iPhones. It sounds like they'll have 24MP selfie lenses, up from 12MP on previous models. We'll have to wait and see how that actually manifests in practice, but hey, a larger number is nice.
It also sounds like the Pro models will have a trio of 48MP lenses this time. Last year, the telephoto lens was only 12MP, so that could potentially be a big step up. One last thing to note is that the Air model will supposedly only have one rear camera, similar to the old iPhone SE and iPhone 16e models. No ultra-wide or telephoto shots for Air users, unfortunately.
A new magnetic fashion accessoryCrossbody straps have become a popular accessory with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and Apple seems poised to release a magnetic crossbody accessory for the new iPhone 17 (and possibly new AirPods as well). A leaker released this picture showing a bright orange strap, which would attach to the iPhone magnetically.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. The iPhone 17 colorsLeaker Sonny Dixon recently posted some photos of iPhone 17 dummy models that purported to show the color options for this year's new models.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Perhaps the most striking one is a new orange color for the Pro models, which is definitely eye-catching, if nothing else. The Pro models also appear to have regular black, white, and dark blue options for people who want something a little less exciting.
Weirdly, the base model and Air seem to have less exciting color options this year than the Pro phones. In the photos, the base model appears in black, white, light blue, and pink. The Air, meanwhile, comes in black, white, beige, and light blue.
What about the iPhone Fold? The as-yet-unnamed foldable iPhone, which tech reporters simply call the iPhone Fold, is rumored to be ready to enter production soon, but not for a 2025 release date. The most recent rumors point to a 2026 launch for Apple's long-awaited foldable phone, which will reportedly be made with Samsung display technology.
So, unless Apple has a huge surprise up its sleeve, we won't see a foldable iPhone until the launch of the iPhone 18 in 2026.
As for the specs, the iPhone Fold is shaping up to be exactly what you thought it'd be: An iPhone that transforms into a sort of iPad mini. As of Aug. 25, the latest rumors say the iPhone Fold will have four cameras. In addition, leakers say it will have Touch ID instead of Face ID, and no SIM card.
Apple iOS 26: How will it change the way we use the iPhone? Apple shared this prevew of Liquid Glass earlier this year. Credit: AppleHere's something we do know a lot about: Apple's iOS 26. It's not officially out yet for the wider public, as it's scheduled to launch alongside new iPhones in September, but we've tried and tested a number of different beta versions, both developer and public ones.
One thing is certain: Apple didn't change the naming scheme by accident. It's the nineteenth major release of Apple's mobile platform, and as it follows iOS 18, it should logically be called iOS 19. But Apple decided to switch to naming its iOS releases by year, and since this one covers a big chunk of 2026, it was thus named iOS 26.
There's more to it, though. Apple's iOS 26 brings a number of major changes to the platform, including the new Liquid Glass design, a big overhaul of the Photos app, and various Apple Intelligence updates, including Live Translation and a smarter Siri. It's not a radical departure from the previous iOS (Apple doesn't really do radical departures), but it is a very notable upgrade.
Currently, iOS 26 is in its beta 9 iteration, meaning it's quite mature and likely very similar to what we'll see when the final version launches in September. Still, we'll be on the lookout for any new features and upgrades once that happens.
What else could we get at the Apple event in September? In addition to the iPhone 17, we fully expect Apple to drop new versions of the AirPods Pro and Apple Watch. But there could also be some surprises in store, as Apple is reportedly working on a new HomePod and Apple TV devices for 2025 as well. Finally, expect a ton of announcements related to Apple Intelligence, the name for Apple's artificial intelligence features.
